SLED is investigating an overnight incident that left a Cayce Department of Public Safety officer shot and a suspect dead.
It happened on Lorick Street between Granby and Clark Streets at about 1:30 a.m.
Cayce spokesperson Ashley Hunter confirmed for WIS that two Cayce police officers attempted to arrest a man early Tuesday on drug-related charges when the man opened fire on officers, striking one of them.
The officers shot back, killing the man.
Tuesday afternoon Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the suspect as 21-year-old Demetrius Shelley Bryant of Columbia.
“The subject began to resist and a struggle ensued,” said Sgt. Evan Antley with the Cayce Department of Public Safety. “Both our officers are being treated at a local hospital and they’re doing just fine.”The officer who was shot is expected to be okay. The other officer suffered injuries related to the physical struggle, Antley said.
Later in the day, officers were at an apartment complex off Lorick Street where friends say the suspect was reportedly visiting a friend before the incident.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our officers at this time,” said a statement from Cayce Mayor Elise Partin. “They and all our Cayce Public Safety Officers bravely protect and serve our Cayce community. We are incredibly thankful for them!”
“Our council, our staff is sending thoughts and prayers to our officers,” Partin told WIS. “We’re so thankful for them always keeping us safe…they put themselves out there to protect us all the time and we’re thankful for the job that they do.”
According to the Associated Press, this is 45th time this year that officers have fired their weapons at a suspect in South Carolina. There were 42 shootings involving police in South Carolina last year.
Coroner Fisher stated that Bryant suffered two gunshot wounds to the upper body in the incident.
A background check indicates Bryant was arrested at least three times on drug or gun charges in the past 13 months in Richland County. Friends of Bryant tell WIS that he did nothing wrong.
Officials have not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting.
SLED and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the incident.
