Officer Ferguson says, “I believe God put me at the right place at the right time to actually save this life.”

Witnesses are saying it’s a miracle one West Ashley baby is alive after she stopped breathing on Saturday.

Be’yonka Johnson, a neighbor, says, “I just remember the mother keep yelling and screaming, help my baby, help my baby.”

According to the police report, Chanequa Simmons was giving her infant daughter a bath when she stepped out of the room for just a minute to grab the child’s clothes. When she came back, the baby wasn’t breathing. Her neighbors say she ran outside looking for help.

Johnson says, “It was real scary. I actually started crying. It made me feel like it was one of my kids. I was real–like really scary because it was just in the blink of an eye. It was so fast.”

Luckily, Charleston Police Officer Terryann Ferguson was patrolling the area and heard the screams.

Officer Ferguson says, “I believe God put me at the right place at the right time to actually save this life.”

She says Simmons ran out into the road where the police car was. Officer Ferguson stepped up on the speed bump, put the baby on top of the police cruiser, and administered CPR.

Officer Ferguson says, “I’m just happy that I was well trained and I could’ve– under the pressure, just to deliver what I’m supposed to do every day. Save lives, change lives.”

She encourages all parents to become well versed in CPR, just in case.

Officer Ferguson says, “I think CPR should be mandatory, especially for young parents, or anybody that deals with kids, like babysitters.”

Johnson says, “I’m CPR trained, but my CPR training would’ve probably went out the window because I would’ve panicked. I just commend her for holding her ground and doing what was right and helping the baby.”

DSS is putting together a safety plan for the family and continuing to investigate the incident.
