On February 23, 2017, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, Chuck Canterbury wrote a letter to Representative Burgess supporting H.R. 35, the “Health Savings Act.”  The Health Savings Act will expand the use of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), and allow law enforcement officers to put aside money for themselves and their children to help alleviate the mounting cost of deductibles and out of pocket healthcare expenses they face.

Text of Letter:

The Honorable Michael C. Burgess
United States House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative Burgess,

I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to advise you of our support for H.R. 35, the “Health Savings Act.”

The Health Savings Act will expand the use of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), and allow law enforcement officers to put aside money for themselves and their children to help alleviate the mounting cost of deductibles and out of pocket healthcare expenses they face.

Our members have been impacted by the current law, which only allows HSAs to be purchased for certain health insurance plans, and contributions are limited to levels that are often significantly lower than these deductibles. This hurts our members because most of the time they have high end expensive healthcare coverage due to the risks that come with serving the community as a law enforcement officer. The Health Savings Act will help to ensure that HSAs may be used more broadly, by expanding patient choice in how their healthcare dollars are spent and easing a burden on the families of our law enforcement officers who risk so much every single day in the line of duty.

On behalf of the more than 330,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I want to thank you for introducing this legislation. If I can be of any additional help to you, please feel free to contact me or my Senior Advisor, Jim Pasco, in my Washington office.

Chuck Canterbury
National President
