SLED: Coroner, deputies on scene of officer-involved shooting

FOXCarolina is reporting an officer-involved shooting near the Bojangles on Wade Hampton Boulevard.

We will update as more information comes available.

UPDATE from GreenvilleOnline

Greenville County sheriff’s deputies shot a man who they say pointed a gun at them after he refused repeated commands to put the gun down during an incident in Taylors, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said late Monday night.

The man was taken to the  hospital. There was no word on his condition late Monday.

Greenville County deputies received a call about 7:30 p.m. Monday in reference to a suspicious person with a gun, waving it near the intersection of East Warehouse Court and Artillery Road. Deputies found the man on Tappan Drive near Wade Hampton Boulevard and gave him repeated commands to drop his weapon, Assistant Sheriff John Eldridge said.

The man did not drop his weapon and pointed the firearm at a deputy, Eldridge said. The deputy fired at least one round, Eldridge said, and the man was struck at least one time. The man’s identity was not released.

The Sheriff’s Office said the deputy who fired feared for his life, his partner’s life and the lives of nearby citizens.

The officers involved were not identified. The deputy who fired his service weapon was placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure.

Agents with the State Law Enforcement Division responded to the scene after receiving a report of an officer-involved shooting, a SLED spokesman said. It is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. The Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards also responded, which is also standard procedure.

Bystanders came and went as police tape surrounded a gas station in the parking lot of the Walmart. Deputies set up a mobile command center to handle communications. More than a dozen Sheriff’s Office vehicles were at the scene.

Eldridge said more information would be released Tuesday.
