Today in 1992, Patrolman James Howard Simmons, Jr. of the North Charleston Police Department was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer during a seminar they were attending in Louisville, Kentucky.
Patrolman Simmons, 29, was struck in the chest by a .32 caliber shot from a derringer while in a motel room about 4:30 am.
Patrolman Simmons had served with the agency for 6 months. He is survived by his sons, parents, and two sisters.
