Social Security Fairness Act Being Offered

The Fraternal Order of Police has learned that Representative Garret Graves, (R-LA) will offer H.R. 1205, the “Social Security Fairness Act” as an amendment to H.R. 6757, the “Family Savings Act!” The Rules Committee will vote on it this afternoon.

The “Social Security Fairness Act” would repeal both the “Windfall Elimination Provision” and the “Government Pension Offset” in current Social Security law. The legislation is a top legislative priority of the Fraternal Order of Police and has the bipartisan support of 190 Members of the House.

Law enforcement officers who had second careers face as much as a sixty percent (60%) cut to the Social Security benefits because of the Windfall Elimination Provision. This is a reduction of a benefit to which they are entitled because they paid into the system–not an adjustment for a “windfall.”

Similarly, the GPO offsets the Social Security benefit to which a surviving spouse is entitled by two-thirds of the monthly amount of any government pension that they might receive as a survivor.

We urge our members to CALL the Members of the Rules Committee and the Committee office, urging them to support the amendment offered by Rep. Graves to include the “Social Security Fairness Act” into the underlying bill.
