I.      LEGISLATIVE NEWS AND ACTIVITY
National President Chuck Canterbury, National Vice President Jay McDonald, and National Second Vice President Les Neri attended the FOP’s Annual Day on the Hillevent.  National President Canterbury, Executive Director Jim Pasco and the staff of the National Legislative Office provided a legislative briefing to the more than 100 members who participated.

Executive Director Pasco spoke with  W. Neil Eggleston, White House Counsel, about nominations and FOP priorities.

Executive Director Pasco spoke with Alejandro Mayorkas, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to discuss data breach and immigration policy.

Executive Director Pasco spoke with Vanita Gupta, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), about the New Orleans consent decree.

Executive Director Pasco spoke with Sharon Werner, Chief of Staff to U.S. Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch, about general FOP priorities.

Execuitve Director Pasco met with G. Scott Hulsey, Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General about FBI evidence processing issues.

Executive Director Pasco spoke with Ronald L. Davis, Director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) at the U.S. Department of Justice to discuss pending legislation and proposed COPS award.

Senior Legislative Liaison met with Representative Richard B. Nugent (R-FL) and his staff about the 1033 program and other surplus equipment programs available to State and local law enforcement.

Senior Legislative Liaison Richardson and Legislative Liaison Marisa Beam participated in a conference call with other law enforcement and firefighter stakeholder groups to discuss ongoing issues with the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) program.

Senior Legislative Liaison Richardson met with staff in the office of Representative Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) to discuss FOP priorities for this session of Congress.

Legislative Liaison Mike Martin represented the FOP at the inaugural meeting of the Congressional School Safety Caucus, which is co-chaired by Representatives Susan W. Brooks (R-IN) and Richard R. Larsen (D-WA).

II.     THIS WEEK IN CONGRESS
Both chambers were in session this week.

Action in the House
The House considered and passed H.R. 4401, the “Amplifying Local Efforts to Root out Terror (ALERT) Act,” on a voice vote.  The bill, which aims to counter violent extremism will provide training to State and major urban area fusion centers, now goes to the Senate for further action.

Action in House Committees
The Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing entitled: “The Encryption Tightrope: Balancing Americans’ Security and Privacy.”   James B. Comey, Jr, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, testified.

Action in the Senate
The Senate began consideration of S. 524, the “Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act.”  The FOP supports the bill, which provides law enforcement additional tools to combat the growing opioid and heroin epidemic.

We have134 cosponsors on H.R. 973.

We added 1 cosponsor to S. 1651, bringing our current total to 22.

B.  Support H.R. 2254, the “Law Enforcement Officers’ Equity Act”
We added 1 cosponsor to H.R. 2254, bringing our current total to 15.
