I. LEGISLATIVE NEWS AND ACTIVITY

Executive Director Jim Pasco:

  • Spoke with R. Alexander Acosta, U.S. Secretary of Labor, regarding FOP labor reporting issues and law enforcement authority within the Department;
  • Spoke with Thomas E. Brandon, Acting Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), regarding best practices to implement a crime gun intelligence program;
  • Spoke with officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding large-scale visa scams;
  • Spoke with Jennifer S. Korn, Special Assistant to the President of the United States, regarding FOP communications with the White House and DHS.

 

II.  THIS WEEK IN CONGRESS

Action in the HouseThe House considered and passed H.R. 6691, the “Community Safety and Security Act,” on a 247-142 vote. The FOP supports this bill which now goes to the Senate for further consideration.

Action In the House CommitteesThe Committee on Financial Services  held a  hearing entitled: “Survey of Terrorist Groups and Their Means of Financing.”

Action in Senate CommitteesThe Committee on the Judiciary held four days of hearings on the nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh to be the next Associate Justice to the U.S. Supreme Court.

We have 188 co-sponsors on H.R. 1205.

B.  Support the H.R. 964/S. 424, the “Law Enforcement Officers’ Equity Act”

We have 46 co-sponsors on H.R. 964.

We have 6 co-sponsors on S. 424.

C. Support H.R. 4846/ S. 2845, the “Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act”

We have 53 co-sponsors on H.R. 4846.

One additional lawmaker has co-sponsored S. 2845 bringing the total to 7.

The White House released a training video based on the Administration’s Fentanyl Safety Recommendations to educate First Responders – including law enforcement, fire,  rescue, and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. Watch the video here.
