I.      LEGISLATIVE NEWS AND ACTIVITY
National President Chuck Canterbury and his Senior Advisor Jim Pasco attended a summit of law enforcement organizations at the Heritage Foundation to discuss the future of law enforcement.

Senior Advisor Pasco represented the FOP at a meeting of the American Truck Research Institute in Dallas, Texas, on safety, compliance and other areas of mutual concern.

Senior Legislative Liaison Tim Richardson represented the FOP on a conference call hosted by the Office for Partnership and Engagement in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security which provided an informational briefing on the recently released, ?Weekly Declined Detainer Outcome Report For Recorded Declined Detainers” per a recent Executive Order.

Senior Legislative Liaison Richardson and Legislative Liaison Mike Martin represented the FOP at a law enforcement stakeholder meeting with minority staff of the House Committee on the Judiciary.

Senior Legislative Liaison Richardson and Legislative Liaison Martin met with staff in the office of Senator Amy J. Klobuchar (D-MN) to discuss S. 92, the “Safe and Affordable Drugs from Canada Act.”

Legislative Liaison Martin represented the FOP at a meeting of criminal justice stakeholder organizations to discuss pending appropriations for programs administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, including grants to State and local law enforcement agencies.

Legislative Liaison Martin represented the FOP on a call with criminal justice stakeholders on the appropriations process.

Legislative Liaison Martin attended a policy briefing on the innovations in law enforcement to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic.

II.     THIS WEEK IN CONGRESS
The House and Senate were both in session this week.

Action in the House
The House is considering H.R. 1628, the “American Health Care Act,” and related amendments.  The bill, which makes significant chances to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), is expected to have a final vote on passage sometime on Friday.

Action in House Committees
The Committee on the Judiciary considered and favorably reported three bills: H.R. 695, the “Child Protection Improvements Act,” H.R. 883, the “Targeting Child Predators Act,” and H.R. 1188, the “Adam Walsh Reauthorization Act.”  All three bills are now pending on the House floor.

The Committee on the Judiciary also held a hearing entitled: “Examining Systemic Management and Fiscal Challenges within the Department of Justice.”

The Committee on Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing entitled: “Fentanyl: The Next Wave of the Opioid Crisis.”

Action in the Senate
The Senate considered and approved two resolutions rolling back new rules at the U.S. Departments of Interior and Labor imposed by the previous Administration.

Action in Senate Committees
The Committee on the Judiciary spent the week holding hearings on the nomination of Neil R. Gorsuch to be an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions held a hearing on the nomination of R. Alexander Acosta to be the Secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor.  The FOP supports this nomination.

A.  Support H.R. 1205, the “Social Security Fairness Act”
We added 8 cosponsors to H.R. 1205, brining our current total to 98.

B.  Support the H.R. 964/S. 424, the “Law Enforcement Officers’ Equity Act”
We have 2 cosponsors on H.R. 964.

There is 1 cosponsor on S. 424.
